About the event

We’re hosting our first-ever Literary Salon, and who better to set the tone than A’Lelia Bundles—great-great-granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker and biographer of her namesake. Her new book, Joy Goddess: A’Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance (Scribner, June 10, 2025), dives deep into the life of the dazzling heiress, arts patron, and Harlem icon whose soirees helped define the Harlem Renaissance.

From legendary gatherings to international travels, A’Lelia Walker embodied the spirit of Harlem—past, present, and future. Now, her story comes home to historic Edgecombe Avenue, where she once kept her pied-à-terre, for an unforgettable afternoon where books, beauty, and community meet.

Begin with coffee & croissants at MUSE, then set out on a guided walk through historic Harlem with Ms. Bundles, pausing at landmarks once frequented by A’Lelia Walker and other Renaissance luminaries. Return to MUSE for an intimate conversation with author A’Lelia Bundles, a fragrance journey with Harlem Perfume Co., a showcase of select Walker family artifacts, a light lunch inspired by the legendary Dark Tower gatherings, and a champagne toast.

ATTIRE: Dress in 1920s–1930s Harlem-inspired attire with a modern twist. Suggested not mandatory
